or the first time Malta reached the top place on what is known as the Rainbow Map, which is a classification of countries according to the rights enjoyed by the LGBTIQ community.
Malta occupied the third place among the 49 nations listed in the classification, but moved up two places above Belgium and the United Kingdom since the last list was published four months ago, the government said in a statement.
The ILGA-Europe report says the Maltese government introduced several measures in the last months to put Malta in top place. This include a reference with regard to homophobic and transphobic bullying.
In her reaction, Civil Liberties Minister Helena Dalli said the classification shows the great strides forward made by Malta in the last two and a half years.
